Not believable, & erotica bordering on porn. Surprising in Kingsley, but not so re Cruise.

I won’t give away the crux of the story... at first it's a stereotype story line; much older guy (60's), with a younger women (30's).. but then it turns into a real psychological drama! Well played by Kingsley and especially Pénelope Cruz. You get more than a full frontal from her!! Very good movie, a good night out. I give Elegy 8½!

Beautiful cinematograpahy with some under-acting and some right on the mark. Great script that keeps you involved and curious, empathetic with the characters and rips your heart into the open as their lives change in the end.

Well-written, excellent acting. It is one of very few films that can appeal to people who are not adolescents.

Finally... a grown up movie, for grown ups, without any stupid and unrealistic plot twists to spoil it. The storyline may not be to everyone's taste, but the acting was was great as was the casting. If you don't mind slow paced films without car chases and shootings, then this one should appeal.

Kingsley is a great actor with some nuance here. The movie was insipid, predictable while being improbable as we move into act 2. So tired of seeing the old men gaze at the young women in a Hollywood movie. Whatever happened to women over 40? They truly disappear. Another lament for aging men while women all objects and get little to no screen time for remarkably harsh impact aging has one women. The second half is unbelievably stupid. I felt diminished in seeing such pathetic tale.

This is a Wonderful movie, an excellent one and a must see one. The actors are superbs and the subject is very realistic also. Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz was the perfect choice for that couple. He is charming not handsome and she is beautiful and young. The message was sad but clear and so true!

I love this movie :) it is very realistic. I want to see it aging.

The superb acting of Ben Kingsley comes through again, but it was sort of bordering on the ridiculous with this beautiful young lady and the wrinkly old man. At least if they had spent more time discussing books and paintings than making out it might have been more believable. But I liked it.

Very boring and good to sleep through. My wife however enjoyed it very much.

Rather melodramatic. Ben Kingsley wasn't the best match for the young and sensuous Penelope. In some ways, he acted more like her father than lover; romance wasn't convincing. Conversations with his friend played by Dennis Hopper was almost childish. Acting was excellent however; storyline the usual. Ending left you guessing.

I want an 8.5. Not an option. Elegy is all about Ben. Its Ben inside and outside and sideways -- you can taste the sweat and smell the skin. Its sooo intimate, everyone else is just fodder for script support. The best bit of other is Dennis Hopper... its about the boys and its about the secret of being a boy. And I loved it. The plot 'crescendo', Penelope returning with death on her breath was not as important as Ben's response, his jumping and twisting in order to accommodate such a lump of coal. I'm so very glad I experienced his performance. So pleased.

Time passes when your not looking... This wonderful movie is just wonderful. It leaves you breathless. The acting is nothing but perfect. The cinematography reflects the story magically. Ben Kingsley... wow! What an amazing actor. Everything about him is splendid. Penelope Cruz reaffirms again her strong skills as an actress. They are wonderful together. Now go and see it!!!

A witty treatise of the fears of an aging man, his friendships and his lovers.

The storyline is very predictable. Only go see it if you want to have a good look at Penelope's boobs.

Great acting all around. But what a boring story line! A 65 year old professor falls in love with beautiful Penelope Cruz, and she falls in love with him. A beautiful story for any narcisistic 65 year old, but highly unlikely. Not only has noone loved her body as he does. He seems to be the only one bothering to be at her bedside after she has had major surgery years after they broke up. Her large Cuban family that we met, or heard referred to, briefly in the beginning of the movie is conspicously absent. Please...

Hard to say. Is this actual or fiction? It gives a bad name to aging professors --how about the beautiful and sensuous students... I am out of it... thanks for the idea of seeing such a movie and its effect on my already low moral.

Good character acting by Kingsley. Unfortunately his character is not to savory as he attempts to seduce yet another of his students. It's also a bit far fetched as it's difficult to see Kingley as a ladies man and seeing this saggy and shaggy old man in bed with the beautiful Penelope Cruz seems more pornographic than erotic. Dennis Hopper plays Kingley's buddy and is another loser of similar persuasion who remains true to his calling even as he lay delirious on his death bed. Penelope Cruz is only there for window dressing... but she does do a good job to that extent.

Was Ben Kingsley ever cast as a ladies man in his youth? Twice now in recent weeks I have seen him in that role. The film was far too melodramatic for me. Maybe it's intended for a weepy audience. Marvelous portrayals by an excellent supporting cast. Didn't cut it, though.

A very engaging romantic drama that touches deep themes enigmatically. One of Ben Kingsley's best performances: he is nuanced, graceful and furtive in his passion, but unable to commit to love in the heart despite a remarkable intellectual grasp of desire. Penelope Cruz is a dish in anything, and in this film she is fulsome and beguiling. Iconic and tragic, she ages in the soul when rebuffed. Peter Scarsgaard, Patricia Clarkson and Dennis Hopper are excellent as back story, each adding a counterpoint to Kingsley's character. Director Isabel Coixet directs with subtlty a book by Philip Roth that has many masculine overtones. The result is a fine shock: we wake up in a beautifully paced romance of loss with depth and passion. We realize that finally a film for adults has arrived that inspires gratitude, reflection and a tear.
