This movie was amazing. What a plot! Definitely a must see. I found it interesting how the whole story came together in the end.

Perfect from the beginning till the end. A masterpiece and is for those who can appreciate the movie the way Charles did to Nicolo's violin.

I didn't get to watch all of it, but what I saw of it looked interesting. Hopefully I catch the beginning and end next time.

The music and the sense of history both make this a worthwhile film. The ending did not please my sense of reality. Maybe I'm just naive.

I loved this movie. I was drawn into it by listening to the sound track on CD. It is just as engaging visually as the music is passionate and beautiful. You do not have to connect every personal and chronological detail to enjoy this film. See it if you like interesting historical and artistic settings. Listen to the CD first, though.

Beautifully photographed excellent cutting and great soundtrack but sadly this is not combine with a good story, it makes the film look rather simplistic.

A masterpiece! The narrative follows the violin's journey after it's "birth" in the 17th century to present day. This is what movies should aspire to, the key ingredients that make this movie exceptional include a strong plot, passion, excellent pacing, beautiful score, talented cast & director, and lush cinematography. I loved this movie, it's perfect.

A sappy film that was definitely enjoyable but somehow found a way to carry on its melancholia far beyond what was necessary. Performances were interesting and the originality of the story itself deserves some cookies. Worth seeing, especially on a rainy day.

A truly magnificent film. Really keeps you intrigued till the very end (which is the only downfall, but plays into the story well.)

A superb movie, pulled down only by the trite ending. Really worth watching. Story telling at its best.

A trully and thorughly satisfying movie experience. It is amazing to me how the director can make you cry, laugh, and be overwhelmed with a rangeof emotion over a musical instrument. As far as I am conserned the violin is the star of the film and not Samuel. L. Jakson. I love the part when the violin is bieng accustically tested before the auction, and the frequency of the ultrasound is being turned up and the protective attitude that Jakson takes as he is carrying for the masterpiece. If you have not seen this movie, it is a must!!!

A wonderful movie which never insults the intelligence of the viewer. If the music were better it would have been one of the best movies made. Still, it is a minor masterpiece.

Super, super... a movie not to miss "the red violin"pictures are great the sense of the story of the violin is great too, the best part when Samuel L Jackson leaves with the real red violin...

The best film I've seen in quite a long time. This film is superbly crafted, weaving together the strands of story from different historical periods and cultures to produce finally a harmonized and passionate tale. This film is striking in its international flavour, without having recourse to a bland "americanizing" of the different characters and their respective countries. The director, François Girard, succeeds in drawing the spectator into the intrique and passion of the violin's pilgrimage through time and space. I was hanging on the edge of my seat at the ending, and left the cinema with a tightness in my heart. Now THAT'S powerful cinema! Bravo!

An excellent film that really stands out from the crowd. Original without being "weird". Surprisingly, the different settings and languages merge into a unified whole, expertly woven together by the auction, the fortune-teller and the flashbacks. My least favourite part was the final one in Montreal: it lacks the passion and emotion of the rest of the film. I got the impression that Samuel L. Jackson was there just to sell the movie as the only well-known actor. But this is minor in comparison to the story, the costumes, the music, the grandeur, the emotion... The Red Violin reminds us that film-making can be an art and more than mere entertainment.

When I went to see this movie, me and my friend were the only ones in the theater, we had no clue what the movie was about but we went to see it anyway. Somebody told me that it was a Canadian movie, so we thought it was going to be bad but it was a pretty good movie. The story starts on 16th century Italy and ends on present day France. Most of the movie is pretty catching and exciting, other than 15 or so minutes during the middle of it. This is a good movie that did not get much attention.

Kudos to François Girard.. A true classic! A beautifully directed film that takes you across continents, cultures and time periods. What stands out is the style of flashbacks and flashforwards which captures the audience's attention.

I saw this film weeks ago when I last visited Montreal. It made an instant impression on me as a truly great film. The further I get from it, I only find that my feeling is further cemented. It is remarkable in that it maintains a smooth, enthralling flow despite transitions through several cultures, languages, and a span of hundereds of years. This film has met deserved success in Canada and should do so in the United States as well, aided by my constant praise to friends and insistance they see it.

This is a beautiful movie, of universal appeal and international level. The story is that of a violin and the people it "meets" throughout its "life," and is told through a series of flashbacks and flashforwards that could easily be confusing if it wasn't so masterfully written and constructed. Kudos to François Girard for a job well done. I'm expecting this will win an Oscar or two when the time comes, and each one will be more than deserved. If you love music, history and well-built stories, you will *worship* this movie, no less. Worth seeing at $8.50 on a Saturday night, with $12 in popcorn and junk food.
