    Westward the Women

This 1951 film by 'Wild' Bill Wellman from a story by Frank Capra is a good western perhaps not in the usual mode of what we consider the classic western film. The story is by beloved director Frank Capra, but no studio was going to give him a chance directing a western so Capra sold the rights to Wellman. This story of rugged pioneers, Indian fighters and an incredible group of women take a trek of 2000 some miles to California. Robert Taylor stars as Buck Wyatt who leads the motley crew of women determined to make their destination. This genre-breaking western was incredible for its time. It would make a great re-make in our day as WOMEN take such a prominent role. Superb supporting cast of women including the character great, Hope Emerson.
