The film deals with an important theme/message, and is nicely shot. But, I sure had trouble getting into it. The weak performance of the young lead actress destroyed the picture for me; especially in a year which had such brilliant performances from other children (Pan's Labyrinth, Little Miss Sunshine, Tideland, etc. ) The young widow in this movie seemed happy or perky all the time. By the end of the flick, I was wanting to go live in one of those fun widow complexes. And, I really resent the whole Ghandi scene. How, and why, did that just appear in the movie. I could understand his appearance if he ended up being responsible for changing all the horrific practices from the past. But, as the filmakers point out, nothing has changed. So... a saviour appears in the film's climax, and doesn't save anyone/anything. I give the film a 10 for its message... but, a 3 for its execution.
