Coward's adaptation of his hit play about the affairs of a lower middle class family was apparently very popular in its day. It's set between the two big wars and and delves into the petty bickerings and small triumphs of the Gibbons clan. All direcected by David Lean, he makes the most of Ronald Neame's penetrating camerawork. Neame would later go on to be a director himself. For various reasons, this is one Coward adaptation that has not gone on to everlasting glory.
