Despite the bad rap given by critics on this film, I have to say that I throughly enjoyed it. It's a wonderful recreation of an old 40's classic. While the story is not the exact one from the original, it's close enough to bear similarities. In fact, it's a better story this time around. I also agree that the acting was very good. Anthony Hopkins gave a strong performance playing the father and was his usual, mysterious self as we have come to expect from his many other roles. Of course Benicio Del Toro's performance was flawless. He manages to be a likable sympathetic character whose transformations seem incredibly painful. I was actually surprised how much he looked like Lon Chaney, Jr. in some scenes during the movie. As far as Toro's portrayal as the Wolfman I thought he pulled it off quite well. Of all the werewolf flicks I've seen over the years, I don't think I've seen a more menacing beast than in this one. The way in which he attacks his victims is instantaneous and surprisingly scary. There is a multitude of blood and carnage throughout, yet it never hovers on the gore long enough to take away from the atmosphere or pace. Besides that I found the special effects were genuinely convincing and exciting. I thought the vintage costumes and decor were truly authentic for this time period. Oh, and the scenery is great in this film too... the misty moors, lush landscapes, stage coaches passing beneath overcast skies, eerie haunting woods and so forth. I have to also say that the direction is pretty good in this production as well, and as for the visuals they were amazing. So, in closing I say, to all you werewolf and vampire fans, you don't want to miss this one.

I agree wholeheartedly. The first thing I noticed was the actor looked surprisingly like Lon Chaney Jr. I would like to see something like this done in black and white. Hopefully, one day, movie makers will do retro horror using b/w, and intense lighting with touches of German expressionism background thrown in.
