There seem to be two views of this film, the one is what many of the posters say here, wonderful, inspirational. The other is it seemed like it was stiff and contrived. I'm in the second camp. I really wanted to like it, but I thought Martin Sheen overplayed the role (way too crusty, way too drunk etc.) and the story itself seemed uneven. For those with a personal connection to the El Camino maybe it resonates differently. I will give Emilio credit for not overplaying the religious aspect which was tricky given the material, he found a very good balance on that.

Curious.. read all the reviews so far and don't see that 2nd view that you mention anywhere but here.
The Camino is a pilgrimage route that has been travelled for a thousand years to the Cathedral where the Apostle St James is buried. If it weren't for Christianity it would not exist - IT IS RELIGIOUS.
I agree with the first reply. I read all the reviews and didn't notice there was a second camp that thought this movie was stiff, contrived and uneven. It seems to me that Martin Sheen play (just as well as the one of other actors) was quite sound.
