[...] If you like being confused and wondering what the heck is going on, this movie is for you. Damon's character was meant to be creepy and he delivers, but personally I don't find that being creeped out is very entertaining. I found the plot questionable and the whole setting rather preposterous. Add to that the distaste of the main character and we have a real downer. My aunt praised this movie as the greatest thing since sliced bread and it remains one of my worst movie experiences in 13 years! Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow were all excellent, but here's this uncomfortable, unlikeable, unfocused shady guy played by Damon who just won't go away. Bizarre? Yes. Interesting? No. My wife and I both truly hated it and still laugh about how bad it was.

How could you hate RIPLEY, such a very superior film? You probably missed the whole point of the movie! The Matt Damon character is a definite sociopath who becomes even more consumed by JEALOUSY, RAGE and AMBITION to the degree of an obsessive compulsive disorder, unhinging him even further. I truly don't understand how the plot is confusing at all. My 14 year old followed it without a hitch. Perhaps you saw the movie on an off day. Anthony Minghella directed this incredible work right after he directed and won Oscars for THE ENGLISH PATIENT. I know people have various tastes in movies. We are all different. However, if you take in the superb acting (Matt Damon playing totally against type), the direction, the unbelievable cinematography, art and set decoration you won't find a film more ravishing in beauty yet IRONICALLY Ripley, the film is so dark and creepy. All these elements combined truly make up a little masterpiece. One has to look at the totality of a film to be fair to it! It's one of my favourite movies. Give it another go!
