Olivia D. was nominated a fifth time during the 1940's for the mesmerizing, way ahead of its time film "The Snake Pit" which deals with the horror of mental illness and the strict confinement of patients, all in a not too distant past. Miss D's performance was electrifying, playing a woman who is losing her grip on reality. This film from 20th century Fox was the first of its kind on such gruesome, frightening subject matter which makes Miss DeHavilland's performance all the greater. She created a character that received many honours in 1948 including the N. Y. Film Critics Best Actress Award, but the Oscar went to then Mrs. Ronald Reagan, Jane Wyman for JOHNNY BELINDA!
