Steer clear of this movie. As much as the "Ong-Bak" story was cheesy, it held together for at least the first 30-45 minutes, and some of the action scenes were alone worth the price of the entrance ticket. In "The Protector" however, there isn't material worthy enough to even call this a "story". The movie is a colossal joke, one action sequence after the other, without any real meat in-between to tie the fights all together. Essentially, Tony Jaa just fights one guy after the other throughout the whole movie. This is good you might say, after all we don't expect oscar performances, but just plain adrenaline action. There are indeed some sequences which deserve praise, among which a one-vs-one fight between Tony Jaa and a Capoeira artist, filmed in a burning temple with an inundated floor (from the sprinklers) Despite the lack of any real climax in the fight, as you would expect, the pirouettes are quite cool and the burning background and water displacement on the floor creates for a nice cinematographic effect. The other sequence worth mentioning is the assault on the restaurant, which seems to have been shot sequentially in ONE take (camera starts from behind Tony Jaa as he fights his way through what must have been 4-5 floors of over 50 opponents), without any camera cuts. That alone is quite impressive, also evidenced by the fact that at the end of the scene, Jaa is rather tired. :) But no one here is debating the martial artistry ot Mr. Jaa, but rather how this whole material is arranged. Some of the fights are, I regret to say, boring, because of the absence of climax or changes of pace. I don't demand much from a martial arts flick, but even this one doesn't deliver. You can't even begin to compare this movie and movies such as "Iron Monkey" or even old Jackie Chan classics. Not even the "final fight" vs. The big guys at the end saves the day. Oh, and did I mention the story and acting are a complete joke? Save your money and go see Jet Li's "Fearless" instead.
