I'm not much for musicals, but checking out the remake of the movie musical based on the Broadway show by none other than comedy legend Mel Brooks, was just too good an opportunity to pass up. Critiquing the Producers is difficult, as I was laughing so hard and having so much fun watching it the whole way through, it was difficult to concentrate. Needless to say with song titles like "Springtime for Hitler" and "Keep It Gay" the Producers is definitely not short in silliness, and of course throwing Saturday Night alumnus Will Ferrell into the mix as a Hitler-praising neo Nazis doesn't hurt either. Truly the real beauty of the Producers is the wild and over the top characters, that could only ever work in the realm of a musical. Nathan Lane leads an awesome cast that throws away any dignity they had to give the performances of their careers. To see the huge facial expressions, and boisterous body movements from actors like Matthew Broderick and Uma Thurman, fresh off her bloody rampage in Kill Bill no less, is absolutely hysterical. While the Producers is not for everyone, those who enjoy big and booming sing-along musical numbers, the goofy and sometimes controversial humour of Mel Brooks, and the antics of a wonderful cast of actors, will love the Producers.
