This perfection of a film takes us on Hank Williams's last journey, a gig he will be playing on New Years eve In West Virginia and Ohio. He's going by the name of Luke Welles. His young driver, Silas has no idea who his famous passenger is as he has grown up in poverty. This isn't a bio-pic of the country singer but his last two days on the road and his final stab at redemption with the youngster. Henry Thomas ( the boy from E. T.) plays Hank in this fictionalized tale of what might have transpired on this trip he never did finish. Henry Thomas is wonderful at this supposed re-creation of Hank Williams as is Jesse James as Silas, the chauffeur. In Hank one notes a broken down man of 29 due to the smoking, liquor, drugs and a general bad bad life. This is the complete antithesis of the youth though there is only a ten year difference in their age. Silas is what Williams would have liked to be had he grown up a normal kid in an Alabama town.

The film is a period piece of the very early 1950's and it creates that ambiance perfectly. Looking at these people from a by-gone era: the clothes they wore, the cars they drove, the music they listened to bring us all back to that early world of country music. As one hears the Tennessee Waltz, one is literally transported to that former corner of history. The Last Ride features all great new versions of Hank's greatest songs sung by a variety of top country stars. Obviously Hank never sings personally as he's on the road. It all works movingly well. Mr. Williams never makes it to his gig in this fabrication of a plot, but this emotional tale of hope and truth remains one for the ages. Hank and Silas had become friends, two loners with a new found friend. No one can ever take that away from them.
