An interesting piece of film from melodramatic director 'par excellence' Douglas Sirk from the early 1950's when the career of Charles Boyer was beginning to wind down. It is an honest and worthy film of a cleric, or for that matter, any individual having doubts about his/her faith. We create our own lives and often it's difficult with matters that concern the past. It is not at all unusual to go through some type of religious crisis so the premise of 'The First Legion' is pretty well right on the money. It is a crisis that goes back to the very foundation of organized religion.
