Whoa! I was expecting this film to be good fun, and it completely blew that expectation out of the water. Was it an action-packed thrill ride? Absolutely! But the things that really made this film work were the character interaction, the humour, and the humanity of it all. I find with a lot of films, especially ones with magic or extraterrestrials, lack character and emotion. The Avengers delivers on this. I particularly loved the interaction between Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., and Mark Ruffalo. Those 3 guys had some chemistry. I was surprised about how much I enjoyed Scarlett Johansson as well. I thought she would be tacky, but she was great. Definitely a must-see film. The humour was great. If you like Joss Whedon humour (ala Firefly), then you'll definitely get a kick out of the funny moments in The Avengers. Awesome entertainment, all around. I will hopefully get to see it again in theatres, and then that director's cut that was hinted at when it hits Blu-ray. 10/10 no question.

Don't you get tired of giving every movie a ten... ?
Well see, I have been using this site for at least 7 years now and when I was younger I was much more impressed with many of those movies I've given a 9 or 10, and many of the movies I've given a low score to I've come to enjoy (such as Titanic and The Thin Red Line) My movie review scale is as such; 1/10 is the worst film ever 2/10 to 5/10 means it was a pretty terrible film 6/10 means it was not great, but not terrible 7/10 means it was good 8/10 means it was very good but I had some issues 9/10 means it was great 10/10 means it either entertained the hell out of me and I'll watch it over and over again (such as The Avengers) or it means I felt it was a technically stunning film (such as Schindler's List) or both. Honestly I'm not concerned whether or not you thing my rating system is good. I put a 10/10 for films that I love. They don't have to be great in every respect. I'm not a snob. I just really, really enjoy movies.
Thanks for the explanation. I guess they need to change the descriptors in here. As I read them I see eight as a "great movie-Don't miss it". I tend to score movies in the range of 4-8 and leave the nines or tens for a classic film that everyone else might think was great. Before I see a movie I like to read reviews for an idea of what to expect. I am glad that you seem to enjoy so many different styles of movies but I can't get much from your scores as you tend to always give a nine or ten. This particular movie is garnering lots of tens and has an average of over nine. I just don't get it. It was no better that Transformers (in my view) and transformers was not as well received. Avengers seems to be a straight forward action movie with nothing new for the audience and perhaps way too much action at the end. I preferred the Iron Man one and two over this one as Downey has a screen presence, and has great chemistry with his co-stars. So I'll simply close by thanking you for your explanation. And I would not nor did not, suggest you are a snob. Like you I love movies. My system of reviewing is different than yours. I tend to categorize films and base my review by comparing it to others of the same genre. I start with a six (good movie) and work my way up or down on the scale.
