But the ending demonstrates the power of preception, spin and the media as well as the hypocricy of society. He is a premeditated murderer, yet he is let go and praised. Why? Because the media decided that since he did it to save a young girl, he is a hero. Since the media controls what society thinks, society comes to believe that he is a hero. If society believes him to be a hero, then the courts aren't going to charge him and he is let go. However, at the end if you look closely he seems to have a hallucination and he thinks he sees or hears something in the back seat. It shows that he is still mentally ill, and could snap again at any moment. He is not better. Just because the media says you are a hero, doesn't mean you are cured of your disease.
