This dark romantic drama was the second Hollywood film of famed director Douglas Sirk who would reach a frenzy of success in the 1950's with his lush, melodramatic romances. This film is noteworthy for being well based on a Chekov novel, but more for the performance of LInda Darnell whom Sirk turned into a veritable 'femme fatale' of sorts compared to her more ingenue status of before. George Saunders plays to perfection an upper crust role which is uniformly straight up his alley.
