I have to say this was a great psychological thriller. The film has so many different underlying twists that I was lost in the first half of it, but it all comes together in the end and becomes crystal clear. There is a surpassing storyline here. However, when watching Shutter Island, it's hard to distinguish between what's real and what's not, as you're seeing the story through the eyes of Edward Daniels while he tries to untangle the mystery. Thought provoking, and deep, it's quite absorbing throughout the narrative, but just when you think you know what's coming, you have to second guess yourself. Leonardo DiCaprio gives an all out incredible performance, he brings down the house. One thing that can't be denied is his ability to own a role. Ben Kingsley played an excellent character as well in this movie, so hidden was his agenda. Aside from that, the direction from Martin Scorsese is impeccable. He builds in layers and visual clues. There is symbolism and hints at every turn in this flick that unravel and uncover the truth. There is a lot to think about as the story advances. One thing this film is not, is scary, but it brims with plenty of suspense and has a few surprises thrown in to give it that exciting element. Also, the island and buildings are fittingly unsettling, and help to create that perfect context and dark mood. I thought the storm was quite effective too. Wait until the movie's ending though... you won't believe what's in store... it will really grab you. I must admit I haven't read the book yet, but since this flick has now peaked my interest, I'll have to get into it sometime. Please don't miss out on this one... you will be pleasantly entertained.
