Scorcese sticks pretty close to the book - which is undoubtedly due to the fact that Dennis Lehane wrote or at least co-wrote the screenplay. Clint Eastwood had better source material for Mystic River, the other high profile Lehane book. While the film is nicely shot and gets many good performance, including the leads... it seems to drag on about a half an hour too long. Even the so-called climax is ponderous. So, entertaining, but only 'mid-range' Scorcese.
