SENSO is a brilliant Italian film from 1954 which literally took my breath away. It was both written and directed by the astounding Luchino Visconti. It tells a very personal love story between an Italian Countess and an Austrian Officer. But what is extraordinary about the film is that it is all set within the period BEFORE ITALY BECAME A UNITED KINGDOM/ NATION! Alida Valli makes a perfect Countess and Visconti chose FARLEY GRANGER from Hollywood as the Austrian officer, a practice Visconti would continue in several other films, particularly the historic piece IL GATTOPARDO or THE LEOPARD which starred Claudia Cardinale and BURT LANCASTER. I must say SENSO is enlightening on so many matters be they personal, political and even the Italian Revolution for complete Independence from Foreign Rule which in 1866 was nearing the end... well over 25 years since it had begun. A huge SAGA of a FILM that must be seen.
