There is a good film out there that our treacly neighbors from the South almost succeed in spoiling. I have a hard time to buy the accolade by the lake of bleary-eyed young Osment and grumpy Duvall. Those emotions are a bit forced upon us when we are not yet ready. It's like insisting on having the baby after 8 months or something. The cast is very good. Boy/man H. Joel Osment might not see dead people once an adult but he looks like an individual who might very well see some strange things. Let's hope his transition to manhood goes smoothly. The end is sweet. But I am not sure I would not take my chances with a dysfunctional mom instead of living my childhood on this barren tract of land with no kids my age, no T. V. , and no-nothing.
