    Ride the Pink Horse

I just saw 'Ride The Pink Horse' last night (June 3, 2015) a 'film noir' directed by congenial actor Robert Montgomery who had turned to directing a few years earlier. As the lead of the 'noir' Montgomery had to change his whole acting style from a rather genteel screen persona to a hard boiled man out for vengeance. He succeeds in great part. At times, he's just too stiff and doesn't look quite comfortable. This 'noir' is slightly different than most noirs as it all takes place in a smallish Mexican town, not a large city, with the Mexicans not portrayed as cutthroats or the bad guys as in so many films. They, in fact, are sympathetic, helpful to Regan, the protagonist of Montgomery. Of note is that Thomas Gomez as Pancho was the first Latin American Actor to be nominated for an Oscar in 1947 though he did not win. Eighteen year old Wanda Hendrix as Pila made quite the impression on me. She honestly came across as an authentic Mexican! Something quite different even within the genres of 'noir'!
