I saw that a sequel to “Neighbours” was coming out so I deduced that the first one must’ve been good, at least good enough to warrant a follow-up. Indeed, it’s a comedy with plenty of laughs.

Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly Radner (Rose Byrne) are a young couple celebrating the birth of their daughter and their new house. When Delta Psi Beta, a party-loving fraternity renowned for their wild antics moves in next door, a rivalry between the couple and the frat leaders Teddy (Zac Effron) and Pete (Dave Franco) quickly grows out of control.

There’s a nice variety of humor here. Mac and Kelly trying to continue the life they had before their daughter Stella was born and failing makes for plenty of laughs. The stupid fraternity’s outrageous parties also contain many funny moments. When the two collide, it’s the best of both worlds. You’ve got a constant stream of new jokes as the two opponents throw obstacles at each other. There’s a particular exchange in which Teddy and Pete discuss the “Bros before Hoes” mantra that’s highly quotable and memorable. That’s just one of many good moments. Bits like that, or when Kelly and Mac display genuine affection for each other makes this film a lot better than it would have been if there was something as simple as a “villain” that needed to be gotten rid of. I wouldn’t want to live next to Teddy, but you have to admire a man who does what he’s best at with this level of skill. It’s no wonder his parties are the most popular.

Sometimes in a good movie, it’s not so much the big things that it gets right, but the little things that it doesn’t get wrong. Here, Mac and Kelly feel like a real couple. It’s not like one is more mature than the other. They’re similar people, you know the kind that you WOULD see get together, get married have a baby because they have chemistry, similar interests and think along the same lines. They’re partners in the relationship… and in crime when they decide that enough is enough and they want to get back at Delta Psi. I was so relieved when I realized this wasn’t going to be one of those movies where the wife is a harpy who has to pick up after her stupid husband. We’ve seen that do so many times it’s enough for me to dismiss a movie outright when I sense it’s going to be “one of those”.

I’m not sure if “Neighbors” is a comedy I’ll go back to anytime soon, but I found it to be a pleasant surprise. It’s fun, the kind of movie I’d see randomly playing on TV, or in a friend’s collection of otherwise brain dead comedies and single out as something to watch.

I found plenty of legitimately earned laughs in “Neighbors”. Sometimes it has some easy gags, but they feel at home amidst the multitude of good moments throughout. I recommend it. (On Ultraviolet, May 21, 2016)
