Nebraska. The love in this family surfaces like small, dry weeds pushing up through the gray flat landscape of dysfunction and boredom and the cracking depressed surfaces of the sidewalks of dying towns. It is a tough plant without expectation of blossoming. This is a brilliant cinematic essay about the inheritance of hopelessness, alcoholism and the additional destructive impact of war that kills the urge to dream. The journey in this picaresque tale is from the numbing disconnection between a father and son to arrive at a place where the son realizes to be fully alive, there must be a victory of hope.
