    Moon

"Moon" is a very well acted, incredibly smart science-fiction film that plays with your expectations and holds more than a few surprises. The story is set on the Moon, where Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is counting down the days until he can go back home to Earth. As per his contract, he's been on a three-year one-man maintenance position on the dark side of the Moon where he ensures that an army of mining robots perform as expected, with his only companion being his home's personal robot, GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey) With only a few days left before going home, he experiences what I can only describe as a personal crisis because saying anything else would be giving too much away.

One of the best things about the film is the cast. Basically this is a one-man show featuring Sam Rockwell. If you had doubts before of his skills as a performer, they will be utterly dismissed after you have witnessed him here. More than the story, more than the twists or revelations of symbolism or whatever, this guy is what makes the movie take off without a hitch. I also thought Kevin Spacey as the voiced of GERTY did a very good job, but he's never on-screen. He's just a voice. That means Sam Rockwell had to do everything by himself, though I have to give major credit to director Duncan Jones for ensuring that every piece was aligned properly.

A major theme of the film is loneliness. How would someone react if they were stuck thousands of miles away from the nearest human being? What would they do to keep themselves busy? What kind of bonds would they make with the semblances of humanity around them? The story sucks you in and allows you to catch a glimpse of what it would be like to be on a moon base for 3 years without ever seeing anyone else in the flesh. I found this absolutely fascinating. There are times when I'm walking home at work and I wonder what it would be like to be the last man on Earth but this story is profoundly human. I've heard of people going on long journeys for work, or just going away on solo camping trips. This takes it to a whole other extreme.

Despite the low budget, the sets and special effects are convincing and it really shows that director Duncan Jones, on top of writing a story that is really touching (and at times very tense) knows what he is doing behind the scenes. Little touches here and there make this a believable story and what's really interesting about the film is that the science fiction doesn't take over. There aren't any scenes where aliens come up or a time machine messes with the whole equation. First and foremost this is about the character we follow. I love that this is an intelligent film that doesn't go where you expect it to and never takes cheap shortcuts to deliver a message that we've seen time and time again. The key words when describing "Moon" are "original" and "emotional".

Even if you're not a fan of science-fiction, it's a solid film that will really get you thinking because it's not really about the fact that it's a man on the moon, it’s about a man that is alone and has to cope with his situation and the thoughts going on inside his head. There's more to it than that too, so you science-fiction fans have got a lot to look forward to if you pop this movie into your Dvd player. You'll be happy to see a film what really has some brains and some original ideas. I love "Moon" and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone. (On Dvd, November 23, 2012)
