The classical Hollywood Cinema will be alive as long as Clint Eastwood continues directing. This Horatio Alger tale is straight out of the '40s but told with great heart. Hilary Swank is well cast as the feisty underdog boxer with relentless determination. Both Morgan Freeman and Eastwood himself return to familiar acting territory. Freeman convincing in his 'wise old man' persona while Eastwood is so grizzled here, he looks like Henry Fonda circa 'On Golden Pond' when puts his reading glasses on the end of his knows. Other characters are fairly archetypal with Eastwood's portrayal of the [...] family of Swank something of a mean-spirited cliche. You'll need a couple of hankies for this Rocky meets Old Yeller flick and a strong cup of coffee to get through some slow stretches. Overall, a satisfying film, even if we've been here before.
