Although the beginning of the film is likely confusing to someone who hasn't read the book, this film turns out to be quite good. It is remarkably faithful to the novel's storyline, despite some minor alterations. The cinematography is excellent, although it is hard not to get some beautiful scenes in Japan. Very much worth the investment in time and money.
