    Mad Max

It takes a while for the story of "Mad Max" to begin and the plot slows down towards the middle. I think it's worth the wait though. Basically the world has started breaking down and outside of cities, roaming gangs of bikers do whatever they want while the police in their high-speed cruisers do their best to try and take them down. One particularly nasty gang sets its eyes towards the lone champion of the force: Max (Mel Gibson)

As far as post-apocalyptic settings go, the wide open setting is refreshing from the usual dirty run-down towns you will be accustomed to seeing in these type of films. The villains are fun to watch (even if some of the cronies disappear from the film halfway through) and the heroes are sympathetic. I felt like there was a good amount of "quiet time" to build the heroes and make them feel genuine so there's real drama when they are put in peril. I think this is a movie that suffers from being Imitated a lot because even the big scenes of revenge as Max mercilessly takes down the villains felt a bit standard to me. I also felt like the plot doesn't offer any true surprises so it gets slow when there isn't a car chase, a crash or a scene where Max or his nemesis Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne) get to interact with the other characters in his world.

What makes this picture special, aside from the titular character who is compelling to watch, are the stunts and special effects. This picture has some intense car chases and the crashes feel completely real because there aren't any computer effects, or stunt cars or any of that. It's pure and simple: a scene calls for a car to smash through a trailer, so they bought a cheap trailer, a cheap car and had them collide. I found the plot to be slow but thankfully it picks up towards the end (Even though the conclusion is pretty standard in terms of these kinds of action movies)

While I saw this movie I wondered to myself what the big deal was… until I saw the stunts and car crashes. Anything to do with the cars is flat-out spectacular and with Mel Gibson's charisma there's enough to here recommend the film. (On Blu-ray, November 20, 2012)
