    Listen Up Philip

I very much identified with this film as I remember awaiting the publication of a series of my poems written in three different languages. I enjoy the process of writing, not blowing my own horn. I love the isolation of writing all by my lonesome, but I never crave the public eye. The film harps on this sort of premise or theme!

And so the hero of this story seems almost crushed by the daily events (everything and everyone about him) that push him to... quasi-insanity! (One feels it if in the circumstance.) When he receives an offer from a great friend (Ike) played by Jonathan Pryce, well a necessity of life is fulfilled. One can go only so far, even with one's g. f. before cracks begin to show! As humans, we are of varying intelligence, but we all have emotions and a breaking point.

This drama with some complex moments of comedy and all that life has to offer rolled up in one big ball of reality is a delicious slice of life especially if of the literary bent. The human spirit is a complex thing that can go through many trials and tribulations... but at times, and boy do I feel this, you want to be on some desert island thinking only of yourself.

This is a film that, unfortunately, most won't appreciate!
