I like the idea of “Keanu”, but the film left me a bit disappointed. It’s got funny moments throughout and I laughed or chuckled frequently enough that I can recommend the movie. Some of my dissatisfaction comes from personal pet peeves; others come from genuine issues that should have been addressed before shooting started.

After his girlfriend breaks up with him, Rell (Jordan Peele) finds solace in an adorable kitten he names Keanu. The honeymoon is cut short when a misunderstanding causes gang leader Cheddar (Method Man) steals the cat. Rell and his cousin Clarence adopt fake “gangsta” personas to get it back.

My first issue with the movie is one that might be unique to me. I just don’t care for comedies where the protagonists are stupid. Rell and Clarence are not thugs; they have respectable jobs, have never shot a gun in their lives, they talk very eloquently. The joke is that they have to pretend to be gangsta in order to infiltrate the criminal world and get the cat back. But do they have to be so dumb about it? They’re not good liars, they constantly get themselves in easily avoidable situations. They nearly blow their cover over and over. Why not have them play the parts convincingly after doing a lot of “research” only to find that the stereotypes they assumed were true, aren’t? That would be clever and more original.

In defense of “Keanu”, the two protagonists acting like fools do deliver a good amount of laughs. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele have very great chemistry, they play off each other very well. They often get themselves into precarious situations that could be avoided if they had actually come up with a decent plan ahead of time, but when they’re scrambling for explanations as to why two tough guys are listening to George Michael’s “Freedom” it’s funny. I also like the idea of all of these different people being obsessed with a kitten. They’re preparing themselves for war, over that little thing? It’s ridiculous and I love it.

The ending to “Keanu” is weak, way too tidy for my taste. Everything falls into play very conveniently, just so the film can wrap itself up. I’d say it’s even lazy in how perfect it all seems. There are more moments that work in the film that doesn't, so my final verdict is “I guess it’s alright”. I hope that what we have here are humble beginnings for two talented comedians that will move onto bigger and better things. If you catch this one (and I think you should if you’re interested) stick around for a post-credit sequence. What does it mean? I’m not sure, but it’s a funny joke.
