I'm glad to say I won an advance screening pass for two to see "Jack the Giant Slayer" and didn't have to pay the admission to see it. I ended up taking a friend along with me and I must say we both enjoyed this movie and found it to be very good. This was a pretty nice retelling of an old story, easy to follow, a bit lengthy, but with some elements of charm and humor thrown together. However, the acting was moderate... just don't expect the best performances... take it with a grain of salt. The lead character, played by Nicholas Hoult, did a plausible job in the film. He was good at pulling off Jack, who seemed to be a likable and modest farm boy. Also, Eleanor Tomlinson was well-suited for the role of Isabelle, but she reminded me a bit of an animated Disney princess which wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Nevertheless, she was fine. I found the on-screen romance between Hoult and Tomlinson's acting was somewhat unnatural at times, but it was okay for the most part. The rest of the characters are decently developed, including the honorable knight Elmont as Ewan McGreggor. Thought his charm and wittiness really stood out. Stanley Tucci as Lord Roderick was also interesting to watch, as he played quite the comedic villain who is pretty easy to hate. However, the real enjoyment in this picture comes out of the build-up and suspense of those towering, freaky giants. I never expected there to be so many of them, but I thought this made things a whole lot more riveting. Also, these big oddities seemed very real to me. I thought their demeanor was actually what it really ought to be... uncivilized, bad-tempered, and just overall mean. The special effects were well done, but not excessive, as is so usually the case nowadays. Then there's the fast-paced action which never gets boring, especially the battle scenes between the giants and humans, and scenes with the crazily growing beanstalks. There were moments that had my heart racing and mouth drop open in awe. Other little unexpected surprises follow throughout the movie which are nice to see, grabbing your attention. Keep in mind too there are some gross parts that may cause you to feel a bit queasy, although they don't pale in comparison to the gore factor in Hansel & Gretel: Witchhunters. As for the film's mood it is lighthearted, and family oriented, just not suitable for the little ones. Overall, a fun-filled fantasy adventure that preteens and broad-minded adults will get a charge out of.
