This movie was extremely disappointing as I love science fiction movies which involve space travel and first contact and that sort of thing and had heard that Stephen Hawking had been involved in making this film. The movie starts out well with the family living on a dust filled corn farm. Despite all of the well known actors in this movie the one who stole the show is the young girl who plays Murphy. Unfortunately, the movie goes downhill once it gets to the actual space travel part of things. The science behind this movie is just all wrong and I am sure that Mr. Hawking must be embarrassed to have his name associated with this movie. Nothing is ever explained in the movie as to what happened to make the earth unlivable which is likely a good thing because if they had spouted off about some global warming nonsense I likely would have walked out at the beginning. All we know if that nothing will supposedly grow on earch anymore except for corn and even that is being destroyed by blight. We also do not know what year this movie takes place in but it must be 100s of years in the future given that the space travellers seem to be able to travel from planet to planet in a matter of minutes rather than the 1000s of years it would really take, although it did take them 2 years to get to Saturn which is only a little faster than we can do it today so that did not make any sense. The acting by all of these well known actors is just plain wooden and Matt Damon is truly awful. The musical score is irritating and just interferes with the movie and I could not hear what the actors were saying half the time. The special effects are amateurish and I could have done a better job on my home computer. The special effects are actually below the level of 1968's A Space Odyssey which this movie tries so hard to copy. If there was any money spent on this movie it went to all of the well known actors who were not needed in this movie and should have been spent on the graphics. It was almost like someone wrote this screenplay and then filmed it in one week as it is so badly put together and disjointed that it makes no sense. This movie does not even come close to the level of epic science fiction movies such as A Space Odessey and Contact. I made the mistake of seeing this movie in Imax so all of the flaws were magnified and readily apparent. There was nothing awe inspiring in this movie. The images involving space travel were truly pedestrian and I was expecting some majestic images of suns and planets and things and there was nothing like that here, just wooden actors and poor special effects. I wouldn't even recommend seeing this movie on CD as it is not worth it, although I suppose if you watched it on a 7" Ipad screen or something the poor special effects would not be so apparent and the movie might actually be better there than on the big screen.
