Three Important Points: 1) This is not an action flick. This is a piece of social commentary, focusing on the issues of racism and enlightenment. Don't expect dirty Harry or car chases. Instead, expect to still be talking about this film weeks after you've seen it. 2) Racism is stupid, so the film makes it look stupid. There is no sugar coating here. The racial epithets will make you groan, all the more when you realise that Eastwood's character has his facts utterly wrong about the targets of his bigotry. All those who are likely to be offended by racial slurs should see the film with the understanding that racism is NOT being glorified here, but rather vilified. 3) Gangs are stupid, and so are gang members, so the film doesn't treat gang-bangers with anything other than the contempt they so richly deserve. Interestingly, the film manages to draw a parallel between Racism and Gangs. Instead of treating these themes as diametrically opposed, the film shows them to be equivalent, and even similar, forms of idiocy. Final thought: The ultimate solution to Eastwood's problems, and there are many, is quite clever. He reaches beyond himself and his beliefs and becomes, finally, human.

And he also demonstrates that only white people can "reach beyond themselves and their beliefs and become finally human." Thanks Clint.
