George Stevens' massive, sprawling epic won him the Best Director of 1956, but for me the film is far too rambling in scope to sustain interest in this family saga that goes on through many years. It was Rock Hudson's only Oscar Nomination and James Dean was nominated posthumously again. Liz Taylor is just fair. What truly made the piece live for me was the coterie of supporting players like Mercedes McCambridge, Chill Wills and all the young talent most of whom would go on to significant stardom.
