Billy Wilder's 1943 thriller showcases Franchot Tone in one of his best roles and an illuminating performance by a very young Anne Baxter. The black and white art direction/set decoration is especially impressive. The headline of the art poster of the time read: "Did a woman start the rout of Rommel"? That's for you to find out. By the early forties Wilder was both writing and directing his feature films, a very early 'auteur' indeed.
