Fierce Light: When Spirit Meets Action

Seriously, where are those 'ten' ratings coming from? Have you been sleeping at the cinema or what? First of all: the audience at the Carlton was the most annoying bunch of people I've encountered so far. Couple of kids in front of me were in a desperate need of a room (!) blocking my view of the screen; the same row to the right: mom with kids talking while eating some chips the entire time with this irritating constant loud chewing noises, not to mention the extremely annoying plastic bag crackling; a woman in my row snoring (!); and a couple of people behind me constantly talking. If this audience was THAT busy during this movie, then I guess they are the ones shooting '10' ratings right now, because it's just impossible that they have really seen it. I'd say the movie director made a hell of a job, boring people to death. I'm confused and really curious about the purpose of this movie. Was it supposed to agitate everybody to go on the streets and while hiding behind the Peace word, scream War with the actions? Is it actually encouraging more Tamil protesters on our highways? Does it really mean that if I don't like my neighbour it's enough if I go outside, sit in the middle of the road, until my problem gets solved? I find this movie immature, to say the least. I'd say: when spirit meets action, that's when war begins. This completely contradicts what Thich Nhat Hanh said: "To end the war in the world, we must end the war in our hearts first" which was actually the only bright moment of the entire movie for me. I didn't like this film, although it was really nice to see the director, the producer and one of the activists after the viewing. I admire their efforts invested into creating this documentary, but the outcome definitely is NOT inspiring, fascinating, powerful etc. I am really sorry to say, but it's simply a mess.

Have just skimmed thru your very interesting reviews. Well done. But this is a misstep. It is pointless to review an audience. Your discussion of / opposition to what you perceive to be the theme of this one, though, is interesting enough to make me want to see the film. I have a healthy respect for religiosity though I believe it is a form of magical thinking.'Faith' is more dangerous to this planet than crass materialism.

Unfortunately, the audience played a big role in how I perceived the entire movie. Had I been able to concentrate on it without any annoying distractions, maybe I would've been more kind in my review. However, I do stand by my word - the movie and its message is not as fierce and full of light as the title and most of the reviewers suggest. To me it's just a mess. I realy feel cheated by all these skyrocketing reviews. It's because of them that I truly thought I was going to see something of Baraka magnitude at least. Instead, I just found an akward attempt at creating an interesting documentary. I am really disappointed. But by all means, go and see it yourself. Hopefully you'll find something more interestingly meaningful to hold on to after watching it, than I did.
