Einstein on the Beach: The Changing Image of Opera

Philip Glass whose roots in the 70's were of the underground musical nature has become a world phenomenon. Moving to Paris for studies, his meeting with Ravi Shankar and theatrical "genius" Robert Wilson was about to revolutionize Opera as we know it. With the first stagings of EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH one automatically knew and sensed emotionally that a new musical idiom was conceived as daring as were the conceptions of VERDI and WAGNER in the 19th Century. EINSTEIN was very radical, probably the most radical of Glass's works. His numerous operas since Einstein, film scores, symphonies, songs all retain what was once known as MINIMALIST MUSIC, now a staple in the music world with many others emulating his style. It all started with EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH, a total bizarre mystery for me till I found within myself what Glass was attempting to do. Glass is by no means a composer for the masses and his EINSTEIN might just clear out an Opera House if inhabited by folks with just a passing interest in music. The work is a difficult, complex piece.
