    Dreamgirls

This is a film that doesn't know what it actually is. It begins as a 'rockumentary' -style film about a popular singing trio, a la Gladys Knight and the Pips. Then, with no warning, and after the film is well underway, cast members suddenly burst into song instead of keeping with the dialogue they've been using up to that point. It really throws you for a loop when they start singing their lines to each other. Then, inexplicably, they all go back to dialogue. Then they're singing the dialogue again. Then... You get the picture. I like musicals, I like opera and I like 'talkies'. What I don't like is when a film can't make up its mind which one it is, so it vascillates back and forth throughout the whole thing. The sound track is fabulous though. Absolutely fabulous.
