    Cube

"Cube" Is a well-made, low budget horror film with an interesting premise. Five strangers wake up inside a strange structure. They quickly realize that they are all trapped in a maze of cube-shaped rooms, some of which are filled with lethal booby traps. The group has to learn to trust each other in order to make sense of this strange situation and find a way to escape.

I like this film's story and I think the simplicity of it all makes it ripe for all sorts of interesting character Interactions. There's a big mystery as to why all of these people are here, how they're supposed to get out and what exactly is going on with all of these rooms. Unfortunately the film suffers from bad dialogue and the ending doesn't live up to the strong beginning and middle. It's well shot and made in a way that you won't be questioning the premise, which is a feat in itself since I'm pretty sure there's only a single set for the whole movie. Normally a slew of characters being trapped in an elaborate hi-tech maze would be ridiculous but in a clever more, the film never really gives us a date on when the film is happening, where these events are taking place and barely explains how this all came to be. This movie could be happening in the present or in a distant future in a far-away galaxy for all we know. That to me shows a lot of intelligence from the people in charge of the picture.

When it comes to the human characters, many of them often act stupidly (one second they're carefully making sure rooms are safe, the next they're just setting themselves up for a huge accident) and the dialogue is clunky. There is one "villain" that comes not necessarily out of nowhere but changes so dramatically and so quickly that it's hard to buy. That felt like a missed opportunity. The gore and violence is actually pretty tame for this genre of film so if you're looking for violent, bloody and creative deaths because you've heard this one being compared to "Saw", you're going to be disappointed. The physical horror isn't really the focus of the film, it's more about the paranoia of being stuck in a maze with people you're never sure if you can trust.

There are enough good things in "Cube" for it to be worth your time, even if it doesn't really live up to its potential as a paranoid horror and it won't blow you away. (On VHS, December 15, 2012)
