    Being There

Being There is a film that has everything going for it, a supporting Oscar win for Melvyn Douglas, Peter Sellars ( whom I never could tolerate much) Shirley MacClaine at her best, a fantastic script, a comedy of sorts but one which rarely renders many "real" laughs. Everyone has noted time and time again what an indelible performance Sellars gives. Losing the Oscar that year, I'm sure enraged him, but I truly got very tired of his so-called wisdom of fools, if you will, so I was perfectly content he did not win. There is one other review here which I read carefully and there could not be two more diametrically opposed view points. This is a film that means nothing to me. I can't even get through another sitting. I have to repeat watching Sellars is like watching paint dry in Being There. A movie I dislike immensely! And a Sellars performance I just can't watch. I see what is being attempted with the film and it is altruistic, but for some reason it gets on my nerves. Giving it a generous 3 for the great MELVYN DOUGLAS!
