Another fine work by the director, a film that is actually much more emotionally intense than his previous celebrated opus, 21 Grams. Pitt and Blanchett may be the star power behind this film, but the most rivetting performance comes from Rinko Kikuchi's portrayal of the deaf-mute Chieko: a powerful and courageous performance that is truly the signature peroformance for this film.
