There are so many wrong with this movie!!! The movie centers around Will Smith and his son. That's pretty much it for the entire movie. Now it's true that a single character can drive a movie (Will Smith did it for the most part in I Am Legend and Tom Hanks in Cast Away) but Will Smith's son doesn't seem to have to have matured enough as an actor to pull it off... Yet. Now that isn't to say he was bad. Not at all, but it's a far cry from being able to hold a 100 million dollar movie together for 2 hours. He was good in The Karate Kid too but he had Jackie Chan to play off of. Here he is pretty much alone. Yes Will Smith is technically there but he is injured and far away so all you get is his voice. He is not really part of the action which leads me to my next point. When you go buy a ticket for a Will Smith movie you expect to see Will Smith! Sadly he leaves the lead to his son while taking a backseat presence as an injured soldier in his ship. The fact is that the only good scene is that speech that was made about fear which is both true and inspiring. However the rest of the movie holds dull and even the moment when the son overcomes his fear to be in control of the moment is anti-climactic in sort as the viewer is so uninvolved with the character that his triumph is not appreciated. Whether this may be due to his acting chops or not is irrelevant in the end no one really cares enough. Hard for a young boy to be put alone to carry such a big movie so early but sadly it didn't cut it. He is a fine actor and I will go see more of his movies if he is surrounded by an experienced cast which can elevate his presence on screen and make him grow as an actor.
