Ok, I saw this movie on a saturday night at the paramount and I can't say I enjoyed the movie all that much. Is it because people were right out laughing at the movie during the screening or because the movie itself had not much to offer to the typical movie buff I can't really say. Its fairly obvious that the audience's reaction during the movie has a pronounced effect on your perception but either way. Cronenberg was never really catering to the usual action-film buff to begin with so please refrain if that's your interest. Cronenberg's style requires a delicate taste for the intricate unpronounced but inferred interactions of a human being with his environment, a revelation of human nature. With the very obscure character protrayed by ralphes fiennes in spider being the epitomy of the genre. Obviously, A history of Violence reflects a much more subdued reflection of the genre which is much more appealing to the general audience (Spider did not do too well at the box-office) but it is no less of a character movie than what the short preview infers. This is not Virgo Mortensen doing his rendition of Mel Gibson's Payback or something like that. Just beware of what the movie is about and approach it for the right reasons, it is really delightfull just not entertaining in the expected way.
