This film was an exotic Singaporean film. It happened to be a mixture of Chinese cabaret with American televison shows. The musical numbers had been staged with American pizzary even though the language and some of the melodies are Chinese. By linking the various songs was basic realistic and narrative. The focus happened to be on the getai clubs, the singers and the performers. However, there was this little girl named Liian Hua, had wanted badly to become a singer, but she happened to have a very bad gambling father who was quite ruthless in training her, being quite brutal. She had grown up to be quite a successful singer and had encountered a little boy whose mother had been just as severe and had taken him under her wing. She had also had fallen in love with a singing partner who was taking away the money to pay the gambling debts of her dad. She had been attacked and raped. As she had grown older she had not been taking care of herself, and had gotten fatter, and reclusive. Meanwhile the boy had had grown up which made this film to be moved between fantasy and reality. The singer in her old age had wanted to come back encountering a young man (acted by the same performer) who had done her partner in singing whom she had mentioned and who ultimately had attacked her to get a jade necklace to pay his debts. All of this just to illustrate a song cable 12 Lotus with this film indicating twelve chapters of poor Lotuses life, her struggles, success ended up being a failure and the tragedy of her last days. This film to me was quite interesting as coming from Singapore, but it is for ones tastes for more exotic Asian films. It was well done. Full of music, magic and well wrought drama. The film had captured the hearts and mind of local audiences in Singapore, receiving an award nominaton. It had featured much of the same cast, colorful costumes, dazzling musical performances and plenty of melodrama. The melodra was bad thoughts. It chants the life of Lian Hua, a young girl with big dreams despite of her being quite humble.
