When her name is snatched away and her parents disappear from the human world, 10 year old Chihiro, known as Sen to the spirit world she has unknowingly become a part of, begins to work at a Bath house under the supervision of a strict witch. With the help of a curious apprentice named Haku, Chihiro begins to find herself and realise that hard work is needed to achieve goals and dreams, and not everything is handed down on a silver platter.

This is a very good piece of animated cinema. It is thematically rich and subtle, and it has an engrossing story and characters. A trademark of Miyazaki Hayao's filmography is the lack of characters whose motives can be simplified into good or evil----every single one, from the sorceress sisters Yubaba and Zeniba, the lonesome wayward spirit Noh-Face, the spoiled baby Boh, the dehumanized and depersonalized Haku, and Chihiro herself is morally ambiguous in their actions. Chihiro, the protagonist of the story, is but a normal Japanese girl, a youth who has been stripped of interest in her deep heritage and whose tastes lie in materialism. In only a short while, she loses her parents and her identity, but in the struggle to gain her identity back so she can return with her family from the world of the divine spirits to the mundane everyday world, she sheds her "western" shell and becomes more respectful of her Japanese heritage, and as a person she grows immensely, her hidden inner talents brought out and her own values reshapened as she learns what it truly is to be human. In the process, she aids others in regaining their identity and their "humanity". She is a role model for the young women of not only Japan but of the entire world. The whole motion picture combines epic qualities and moments of quieter introspection rarely seen in films these days. As for the technical quality of the film, very few 2D animated films outside of those once produced by Disney, Don Bluth, and Dreamworks can reach the level of sophistication and expressiveness in this movie. The character designs, the background art, and the rich movement combine to create a visual treat. Sure, the frame rate is not as high as many American animated films, but it is not the number of cels per second that define whether animation is good or not. The grace, subtlety, and detail in the character animation is easily on par with the best from Disney's first golden age, even if the animation is not as fluid. However, though the fluidity is not so great, the animation is less jerky than 99%of all japanese anime every released. In Miyazaki's hands, the animation feels natural, realistic, and he brings the characters to life as very few animators can (others that come to mind include Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnson, Glen Keane, Bill Tytla, and Milt Kahl. ) Overall, a film that should not be missed.

Spirited Away is not a visual treat, none of the Japanese animation is. The story is entertaining though, and the message is presented in an easy to accept manner. Based on the huge accolades piled onto this movie I expected more. At the end of the day, it is a very good Saturday afternoon cartoon.

Reminds me of the old days when Disney didn't stick to today's formulaic storytelling found in most of Disney's films today. This film is probably the best recent children's animated feature, however this is not saying much as there is little competition nowadays. It is very overrated, evidenced by some film critics even giving the film a higher than perfect score. However, until we start seeing the quality of children's animated features back where it was ten years ago, this will undoubtedly please many.

I'm not going to say "This is the best movie I've ever seen" because guess what? Everyone has said that. And there's a reason to it. The movie takes a substantial differnce compared to the old fashion hero beating the bad guy. In this gase the Hero(ine) doesn't beat anyone. She survives, by being willing to take on duties and responsibilities that no one would be able to take on. She is brave and that is nontheless admirable. For all those of you who can't see past the long story and endless vomiting, I pity you. This is a tale about survival and the amazing determination and hope that one girl has to use in order not to just survive, but to leave a fantasy world filled with wild and amazing creatures. Even the villain, or if you can call her that, is someone that you can analyze forever. The detail of the plot I believe has been simplified from the amazing works of the creators to begin with. But nontheleses 10/10 is an extreme underestimate of what I would put on this film.

I know people wont think much of it, because normally, then 13-17 age group gives it a good rating, but to me, I think the reason I liked this movie so much, is for the beautiful scenery. When I went to see this movie with my Dad (because he knows I like anime, and thought it would be interesting), I immediately thought that it would be a kiddie movie like I thought "Kiki's Delivery Service" was (though I watched it every time it came on tv), and it wouldnt be too interesting, especially for my Dad. But after the movie, though it wasnt what he thought, we both agreed that the scenery was amazing. As I sat in the movie theater and watched, I was mostly focused on the beautiful pictures that were before me, and as I watched it, I was taken away into another world, I was in a good mood, I wished I could live there, and I dreamed that night of the places that were drawn, and wondered how anyone can do that. For me, the scenery in the pictures were better then any painting I had seen. No painting has made me feel like this movies scenery did. So that is probably the reason I gave it a ten.

I don't know what it is about Miyazaki movies that gets all this mass raving and gushing, but in this film's case anyway, it certainly isn't because it's so great. Aside from the animation quality (which is superb), it's very average. What passes for "imagination" is simply incoherence. And what passes for "plot" is... wait a minute. There is no real plot. Spirited Away is really close to getting someone's LSD trip onto film, but judged impartially AS a film, it is average at best and so overrated that it boggles the mind. I liked Princess Mononoke ok, but I did not see what the big deal in Spirited Away was at ALL. Dissenting voice amidst the mass hysteria? So be it.

Spirited Away is a great movie with great screenplays. It is a little bit long though, would have been better if it doesn't drag on so much; a little bit slow-paced at some points. Very good climax though slightly disappointing ending. Some parts are confusing. It is not the best of Miyazaki's work. Of all the Miyazaki movies this is the second best after Princess Mononoke. Overall, this movie is a very well done movie. A sweet story plot, great accuracy of actions of beings, great imagination, nice screenplay (Go the screenplay!) , great effects. I recommand it to people above the age of 5 and are patient since sometimes it does get a bit boring.

Anyone who rated this movie less than an 8 is TRIPPIN'!! This is one of the best animated films that Miyazaki has ever created. It makes a whole lot more sense if there is an understanding of Japanese culture and with the ever plenty symbolic metaphors about nature and human behavior. This is such a good movie! It didn't win an oscar for nothing!

I've watched a lot of anime in my life and I have to say the more of it I saw, even in my first year of real exposure, the more I saw of it, was just medicore animation, mixed in with nudity, sex and violence. Well Stupio Ghibi is usually pretty good, high above most anime. I've seen most of their films and the usually represent a different style and feel then most of the TV and OAV trash you see. So what can I say about Spirited Away? Well I can see why it won an Oscar. Nobody in Hollywood has brains enough to figure this one out, so they gave it to it. At it's best Spirited Away is a sick, gross and perverted twist on both Pinochio and Alice in Wonderland. But since this is from Japan, it HAS to be in a Bath house. Yes this proves that EVERY animation company in Japan is perverted to the max. :) I think it almost deserves an Oscar for not showing any boobs trough the entire movie, but it goes one more and shows a have naked Chihiro riding a dragon. (This makes all the petifiles happy I'm sure.) Of course you're thinking, hey that's art. OK hide from the facts, that's up to you. But when you watch enough anime, you'll see my point loud and clear. Is the movie any good? Well, it like so many of these films feels like a foriegn film. It drags with no real purpose, or anything to show where the plot could, or might go. It just sorta stumbles along. Alowing any character to be evil one min and good the next, without much reason, or cause, unlike Alice in Wonderland. And all these characters are either extra gross, or extra fat. The movie is OK, for what it is, but it's really nothing special like Dreamworks spirit and lacks the story telling and adventure of Treausre Planet. If it was made 15 years ago you would have found it on Sunday afternoon TV and that's as far as it really deserves to go..

This movie is excellent. Yes the eternal japanese fascination about the pure girl that will save the world (or herself and family) , yet the storyline is wonderfull the pictures beautifull and the world so rich in color and lore. In fact pretty actual to the asian mythology. Once again a great tip of the hat to the master for this wonderfull story. A must buy on DVD.

Spiritted away was the worst film I have ever seen and I've seen many, the visual effects were great but the story dragged along lick a half dead turtle pulling a water buffalo, I can't beleive I paid money to watch a character steal hours from my life. The problem (s) with this film are so many I don't think there is room on this web site. Japanese films all have a tendancy to drag on and on, what does that mean? A load of scenes with a character standing there doing nothing and I mean NOTHING. I was tempted to ask for my money back, If I got this movie as a birthday gift I'd shoot the friend.
